la historia oficial

Having already explored a range of European Spanish language films, I thought it was certainly time to look outside of the Iberian peninsula, especially since I am interested in South American culture and history.

Trailer for La Historia Oficial

The Official Story (directed by Luis Puenzo) is an Argentinian drama historical film. The plot deals with the story of an upper middle class family in Buenos Aires after the dictatorship, who have adopted a child illegally.  Argentina’s military dictatorship lasted from 1976-1983, and was infamous for human rights violations and genocide. The mother, Alicia, comes to realise that her adopted daughter (Gaby), is most likely a daughter of a desaparecido (women who disappeared due to the military dictatorship). She struggles with the question of coming forward to restore her Gaby’s family, or keeping silent, protecting her family.

The film has an abrupt and deeply shocking ending, with Alicia being physically abused by her husband (Roberto), after she brought Sara, Gaby’s assumed grandmother, to the house.

This film has encouraged me to look further into Argentina’s turbulent modern history, especially the rights of women during this time. South American history is often overlooked in a school setting, so I consider it especially important that we make an effort to learn about it and the effect it continues to have on communities.
